Casebacks and Movement Finishing
An exhibition back reveals the movement; a solid back offers a different surface for the watch's identity.
A caseback closes the underside of the watch. Choose a solid one for an uninterrupted metal surface, or an exhibition back to see the mechanism through a transparent window. This is separate from a skeleton dial: a watch can have an ordinary front and a visible movement at the rear.
What the window reveals
Look for bridges supporting the mechanism, jewel bearings and, on many automatic movements, a rotor that supplies winding energy as the watch moves. A hand-wound movement does not need that automatic-winding rotor. The construction of the chosen movement determines what is actually visible; a display back cannot make every movement share one layout.
Decoration changes how these components catch light. Geneva stripes form broad repeating bands; perlage is an overlapping pattern of small circular marks. Patek Philippe documents stripes, perlage, polished edges and an engraved gold rotor as distinct treatments on one calibre. The back is still part of a case
Transparent does not automatically mean unsuitable for water, nor does solid guarantee a dive watch. Solid shows an engraved-style graphic; Exhibition reveals a simplified movement. Geneva, Perlage and Plain select decorative appearances. Brass, gold and rhodium rotor choices are visual tones where a rotor applies, not a selectable alloy recipe or changed winding efficiency. Those alternatives belong to analog designs. Digital modules have a solid rear cover, not an exhibition window or an automatic rotor. Named mechanical bodies retain source-sized dimensions inside a supported holder; the original visible relief is still not a factory component drawing.
