Grand Feu Enamel

A vitreous surface made in a kiln, not another name for glossy paint—and not immune to damage.

Grand feu names a process, not a shade of white. Finely prepared enamel is applied to a metal support and vitrified by heat. The resulting glassy surface can be opaque or translucent, plain or richly coloured. A glossy white dial alone is not evidence that this process was used.

What the kiln changes

Specialist dial maker Donzé Cadrans describes mineral-based enamel coloured with metallic oxides and fired above 800 °C. Ulysse Nardin describes repeated applications and firing cycles around that temperature. Why choose the look?

A plain enamel dial gives typography and hand shape room to lead. Try dark Breguet or leaf hands on white before adding more decoration. Translucent enamel can also sit over patterned metal; a fumé enamel dial shows why surface, colour and process are separate ideas.

In the atelier

The enamel option approximates a glossy surface with subtle irregularity. It does not reproduce glass layers, kiln chemistry, a handcraft certificate or a manufacturer's colour recipe. Comparing it with Lacquer, gloss is a comparison of rendered appearances—not proof that the two materials are interchangeable in a real watch.
