Matte, lacquer and dial colour

Build the colour story first, then decide how much reflection the surface should contribute.

Colour and gloss answer different questions. Colour sets the palette; the surface determines how that palette changes under light. A matte black dial and a glossy black dial can therefore feel very different even before the markers and hands change.

Not a simple material divide

Matte does not mean unpainted, and lacquer does not always mean glossy. Rolex's dial-making material includes both a white matte lacquer example and coloured lacquer work. Its manufacturing description separately identifies lacquering, PVD colouring and electroplating. These are processes; black, salmon and champagne are descriptions of appearance. Likewise, a silver-coloured dial need not be solid silver, and a champagne dial does not imply gold. Treat the colour name as a useful visual shorthand unless the maker separately specifies the material and finish. Fired grand feu enamel is another process again, not an upgraded synonym for glossy lacquer.

A practical colour study

Try black, blue, green and chocolate with the same light-coloured hands, then white, silver, salmon and champagne with dark hands. This is a starting experiment rather than a rule: reflections can reverse an apparently safe contrast at particular angles. Matte offers a calmer setting for busy typography; gloss gives a plain dial another source of visual movement.

In the atelier

Matte and Lacquer, gloss adjust simulated surface behaviour. The colour choices remain independent, so the same palette can be compared across finishes. Neither option predicts a real coating's thickness, scratch resistance or exact colour on a physical watch. Use Studio and Front views together; the swatch alone cannot show the result under changing light.
